Choosing the right service
Most tree jobs in Melbourne start with a simple aim: get rid of a tree, a stump, a palm or a stand of bamboo. The right service depends on what you plan to do with the ground afterwards and on what is growing there now.
Tree removal
Tree removal is for trees that are dead, dangerous, split, leaning, in the way of building work or simply too big for the block. On most Melbourne lots that means taking the tree apart from the top in controlled sections, lowering wood on ropes and chipping branches on site. The stump is left low unless you ask for more.
Before removal, check whether the tree is covered by a council overlay, native vegetation rules or a local law. The permit guide explains how.
Stump grinding
Stump grinding is the usual finish after tree removal in gardens. A grinder chips the stump to below ground level so you can turf, replant or mulch. It is quick, tidy and works through narrow access.
Stump removal
Stump removal digs the stump and main roots out of the ground with an excavator. Choose it when a slab, footing, pool, driveway or retaining wall is going where the tree stood, or when a species keeps suckering from its roots.
Palm tree removal
Palm tree removal is a different job from removing a broad-leaved tree. Palms are taken down from the crown, the trunk is fibrous and heavy, and some large date palms are protected by heritage controls. Palm cleaning is an option if you want to keep the palm.
Bamboo removal
Bamboo removal is about what is underground. Running bamboo spreads by rhizomes, so the job is priced on how far they have travelled and how they will be dug out, not on the height of the canes.
How the services combine
| If you want to... | Ask for |
|---|---|
| Remove a tree and lay turf | Tree removal and stump grinding |
| Remove a tree and pour a slab | Tree removal and stump removal |
| Clear a block for building | Tree removal, stump removal, green waste removal |
| Get rid of a palm and replant | Palm removal and stump grinding |
| Stop bamboo spreading | Bamboo removal with rhizome digging and a boundary barrier |
Matching the service to Melbourne ground
The same job can look different depending on where you are. In the inner north and inner east, small lots and laneway access mean trees are usually climbed and lowered in sections, and stumps are ground with compact machines that fit through a side gate. In the eastern foothills, slopes and tall remnant gums bring more rigging and more permit questions. On the sandy soils of the outer south east and the bayside, roots spread wide and shallow, which affects both stump work and bamboo removal. The location pages below go into the detail for each area, including the council and the controls that commonly come up.
What every quote should include
Whichever service you need, a fair quote names each tree or area of work, the method, what happens to the stump, wood and mulch, how your property is protected, and who handles any permit. Prices are explained on the tree removal cost guide.
We ask the contractors we work with to hold the licences and insurance the job needs. Ask to see them before work starts.

Answers to the questions we hear most
Can I get several services on one quote?
Yes. Most jobs combine tree removal with stump grinding or stump removal. Palms and bamboo are often priced on the same visit. One quote covering everything is easier to compare and usually cheaper than separate call-outs.
Do you do tree pruning?
Our focus is removal, stump work, palms and bamboo. If a contractor sees that a tree could be kept with pruning rather than removed, they will tell you, and you can ask about it at the quote visit.
Do you work on commercial properties?
The services on this site are aimed at homes, but contractors also quote for body corporates, small commercial sites and rental properties. Mention the property type when you get in touch.
How quickly can work start?
It depends on the contractor's schedule, the size of the job and whether a permit is needed. Urgent safety issues are prioritised. The quote should give you an expected start date.
